Prof. Ajailiu Niumai, Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion (CSSI), School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad presented two original research papers at the 5th International Sociological Association (ISA) World Forum of Sociology, held at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco, from 6–11 July 2025. On July 8, she presented her paper titled “Intersectionality and Human Trafficked Survivors in India”, in a session organized jointly by RC 29 (Deviance and Social Control) and RC 34 (Sociology of Youth). Her paper critically examined the intersecting axes of tribe, class, gender, and ethnicity that shape the lived experiences of human trafficking survivors, emphasizing the need for context-sensitive rehabilitation frameworks.
On July 11, she presented another paper titled “Cultural Constraints of the Naga Women in Political Representation”, under RC 32 (Women, Gender and Society). Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork and sociological theory, Prof. Niumai explored the structural and cultural barriers Naga women face in accessing political spaces, while also highlighting emerging forms of leadership among younger generations of women in Northeast India.
In addition to her paper presentations, Prof. Niumai also chaired a thematic session on “Human Rights and Social Justice” (TG-03) on July 8, where five scholars from diverse global contexts presented their research on urgent human rights concerns and proposed inclusive policy responses. Her moderation of the session facilitated a robust exchange of ideas across regions and perspectives.
She also participanted in the Business Meeting of RC 32 Women, Gender and Society, where she serves as one of the representatives of Asia. Her engagement reflects her longstanding commitment to gender justice, inclusive representation, and collaborative international scholarship.
Prof. Niumai’s presence at the ISA World Forum highlights the University of Hyderabad’s role in advancing cutting-edge research on social inclusion, gender equity, and human rights on the world stage.
