Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor, Shri P. Sardar Singh, Registrar, Prof. Panchanan Mohanty, Dean, School of Humanities, Dr. Ramdas Rupavath, Liaison Officer for SC’s and ST’s Cell and other officials and staff of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) paid floral tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 109th birth anniversary on 5th April 2017 at the University Admin Building.

On this occasion, Prof. Appa Rao said, “Babu Jagjivan Ram was a freedom fighter and social reformer. Throughout his life, he believed passionately in human dignity and individual freedom”. His birth anniversary day is observed as ‘Samata Diwas’ as he believed in bringing equality among all in the society, Prof. Appa Rao added.

Prof. Panchanan Mohanty and Dr. Ramdas Rupavath recalled the contributions of Babu Jagjivan Ram for the society and upliftment of the downtrodden and marginalized community of the country.

Babu Jagjivan Ram was a Dalit Deputy Prime Minister in the first non-Congress government of India. His struggle for social justice is one of the main reasons why he is respected even today. In his political career, Babuji has been Union Minister for more than four decades, handling portfolios like Defence, Agriculture, Irrigation and Railways. He also played an important role in India’s victory during the 1971 war which subsequently led to bifurcation of Pakistan and birth of Bangladesh.
