A symphony of academic excellence echoed through the air, as the University of Hyderabad honoured its graduates in a grand convocation ceremony at Brahmakumaris Shanti Sarovar Global Peace Auditorium in Gachibowli. 1745 students of the University of Hyderabad were awarded their degrees at the 23rd Convocation held on Friday, 13th October 2023.
295 Ph.D. scholars and 166 gold medal recipients were honoured for their outstanding academic accomplishments across diverse fields. Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, was the Chief Guest at the event; Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, Governor of Telangana and Chief Rector of UoH, was the Guest of Honour; Justice L. Narasimha Reddy, Chancellor of the University, and Professor Basuthkar Jagadeeshwar Rao, Vice-Chancellor of UoH, were prominently among the dignitaries on the dais. Dr. Devesh Nigam, the Registrar of UoH and important functionaries from different academic units at the university too were part of the event. The event began with a formal processional walk of the dignitaries onto the stage, followed by a message from the Chancellor officially declaring the convocation open.
In 2023, the following five young teachers received Chancellor’s Award for their exceptional contribution to teaching, research and corporate life of the University:
Dr. Rahul Kumar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Plant Sciences, School of Life Sciences.
Dr. N. Sri Ram Gopal, Associate Professor, School of Physics
Dr. Swati Ghosh Acharyya, Professor, School of Engineering Sciences & Technology
Dr. Murali Banovath, Associate Professor, School of Chemistry, and
Dr. P. Murugan, Assistant Professor, School of Management Studies.
The convocation was kicked off with a presentation by Prof. B J Rao, the Vice Chancellor of the University. He shared significant achievements of the students, faculty and staff. He congratulated all awardees, graduates and their parents. Prof. Rao said, “Let us use the National Education Policy 2020 of Government of India to fulfil our National expectations. The UoH is actively implementing the National Education Policy 2020 where the curriculum for the Integrated PG courses is redesigned, aligning with NEP 2020”.
Justice L Narasimha Reddy encouraged the graduating students and scholars to strive for personal success for a positive impact on the nation. He said, ‘The whole world is watching India. Many accomplishments that our students achieve will benefit humanity. To maintain the university’s reputation, I hope our students’ achievements continue to improve. Students… always remember that whatever you do outside will affect the University’s image.’
Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, during his Convocation speech, inspired the graduating students and scholars to work for themselves and the country. He said, ‘Our country is a place where a lot of exciting things are happening”. He mentioned that our country is growing very quickly and will soon become the third-largest economy in the world. He encouraged the young people to play a crucial role in addressing the challenges that come with this growth. He also discussed the New Education Policy and the importance of providing quality education. While recognizing the challenges faced by ordinary people, he exhorted the students by saying, ‘Now, you young people need to address these issues.’
Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, congratulating the graduates, said, “Your journey has just begun, and the world eagerly awaits your extraordinary contributions. I was tired when I was coming for the convocation, but after entering the auditorium, my tiresomeness went away because of the youthful energy I experienced. You are going to be the achievers and leaders of the country. Every one of you has immense potential; you could be a writer, politician, scientist, actor, Governor, but remember, you have to continuously hone your skills day in and day out. Always be prepared to put in both hard work and smart work”.
The event ended with the National Anthem, and the atmosphere in the auditorium was filled with cheerful celebration. Students from various regions of the country filled the auditorium and its surroundings giving joyous embraces, congratulations, and taking photos with each other and their families. The whole event was broadcast live on the University’s YouTube channel.
