Dr. Geeta Vemuganti, Dean-School of Medical Sciences at the University of Hyderabad has been accepted as a Fellow of the prestigious Royal College of Pathologists.

 

The Royal College of Pathologists is a professional membership organisation with charitable status, concerned with all matters relating to the science and practice of pathology. It is a body of its Fellows, Diplomats, Affiliates and trainees, supported by the staff that are based at the College’s London office. The College is a charity with over 11,500 members worldwide.

 

 

The fellowship is awarded by examination as well as by recognizing the individuals who choose to pursue careers with emphasis on research and other academic activities.  In assessing applications, the college looks for high quality contributions to the field. The main indicators of academic achievement continue to be grants awarded and publication of original work in high quality journals following peer review. All applications are to be submitted for a Preliminary review by experts, which take about 6-9 months. After the peer review, the application is recommended as eligible “to apply” or eligible “to apply for fast track”. Dr Vemuganti’s application was assessed as to apply for fast track, after which she was accepted as Fellow of Royal College of Pathologists. The New fellow’s ceremony was conducted on 22nd February 2023 in London at the Royal College of Pathologists.

 

About Prof. Geeta K Vemuganti:

Dr. Geeta Vemuganti joined to lead and develop the fledgling School of Medical Sciences at the UoH in December 2010 after a long stint as head of ocular pathology services at the renowned L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. A physician- pathologist by training, she has special interest and experience in ocular pathology and stem cell research. Her contribution to cutting edge stem cell research in ocular surface regeneration has led to benchto-bedside applications and won her several national and international awards and honors. She contributed significantly to establishing and expanding Ophthalmic Pathology as a subspeciality in the field of surgical pathology in India and initiated the first fellowship program of Post graduate Diploma Certificate course in Ocular Pathology under the aegis of Indian College of Pathologists. Dr Vemuganti earned her basic medical degree at the JLN Medical College, Ajmer before completing her MD in Pathology at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. She has had advanced training in ocular pathology at the Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles, USA. She has published widely, authoring more than 200 papers in journals of international repute with a Citation Index of 7222 and H Index of 49 (Citation Gadget). She has guided several doctoral students in both basic and applied research projects. Dr. Geeta is also on the editorial board of 4th and 5th edition of WHO blue book on Classification on Eye Tumors.
