Dr. Mendem Bapuji, an alumnus of the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS), School of Humanities, University of Hyderabad (UoH) to join the Linguistic Research Unit at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Mendem Bapuji, who received M.Phil. (2008–2010) and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics (2010–2019) from the University of Hyderabad, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first alumnus to join the Linguistic Research Unit at ISI.
Before his appointment at ISI Kolkata, he served as a guest faculty at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, University of Hyderabad, where he taught Linguistics courses at both the Master’s and Integrated Master’s levels.
Subsequently, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Postgraduate Department of Linguistics at Berhampur University, where he served from November 2021 to May 2024, having been recruited through the Odisha Public Service Commission.
Dr. Bapuji completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Panchanan Mohanty. As part of his doctoral research, he developed a descriptive grammar of Ollri Gadaba, an indigenous language of South Odisha belonging to the Central Dravidian language family. This work is recently published by Lincom Europa in 2025. His outstanding academic achievements reflect his dedication, perseverance, and the strong scholarly foundation provided by the University of Hyderabad. Dr. Bapuji currently serves as an Executive Committee Member of the Linguistic Society of India and as the Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Applied Linguistics.
