Dr. Nagaraju Mandly, Associate Professor at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS), participated in the 9th International Conference on Appliable Linguistics at the Martin Centre for Appliable Linguistics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, from November 8th to 10th, 2024. The prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong University is ranked 45th among the world’s top universities, offering a distinguished platform for global academic exchange.
During the conference, Dr. Mandly presented his research paper titled “Academic Writing of Telugu-Speaking ESL Students: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Approach”. His paper, which examines the academic writing styles of Telugu-speaking ESL (English as a Second Language) students using SFL methodology, was well-received by an international audience of linguists, educators, and researchers.
The conference was preceded by a three-day Symposium on ‘Systemic Functional Language Description’, held from November 5th to 7th , 2024. The symposium was led by renowned scholars of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), including Prof. Christian Matthiessen (University of International Business and Economics, Beijing), Prof. J.R. Martin (University of Sydney), and Prof. Wang Pin (Shanghai Jiao Tong University). These experts shared their insights on the principles and applications of SFL, contributing to an enriching academic environment.
The conference and symposium provided an excellent opportunity for networking and intellectual exchange, highlighting Dr. Mandly’s ongoing contribution to the field of Applied Linguistics.
