A foundation day lecture was organized by the University of Hyderabad (UoH) in the context of the proposed establishment of School of Earth and Environmental Sciences on 27.12.2014. The program began with an invocation and was followed by the welcome and presidential address by Prof. E. Haribabu, Pro-Vice Chancellor, UoH. He stressed on the interdisciplinary nature of earth system sciences and their importance in societal needs particularly the water sector in association with social sciences.
Dr. V. Chakravarthi, Head-UCESS presented the current academic and research programmes of the Center. Prof. S. K. Tandon, IIT-Kanpur; Dr. R.N. Singh, Senior Scientist, INSA; Shri P. S. Parihar, Director, AMD; Dr. Y. J. Bhaskar Rao, Director, CSIR-NGRI, Dr. S.S.C. Shenoi, Director, INCOIS and Prof. S. Chaturvedi, Dean-School of Physics highlighted the multi-disciplinary nature of Earth System Sciences and their relevance in sustainable development in the context of global, environmental and climate change. They hailed the initiative of University of Hyderabad to establish the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. All the directors of National Laboratories have expressed their support for the academic and research programmes of the proposed school.
Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary-Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India delivered the foundation day lecture entitled ’Earth System Science Modeling and Services’. He presented the advancement in Earth System Science and their applications in various sectors like agriculture, aviation, fisheries, weather forecasting, climate modeling, exploration of resources, prediction of natural hazards through early warning systems and probing of deep earth.
