A large contingent from School of Medical Sciences, UoH, consisting of faculty, scholars, alumni presented their research work at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) conference in Seattle, Washington, from May 5th to 9th, 2024.
ARVO is the preeminent eye and vision research organisation globally, known for its size and reputation. They have an extensive membership base consisting of around 12,000 scholars hailing from more than 75 countries. The objective of ARVO is to promote global research in order to enhance our knowledge of the visual system and to develop effective strategies for preventing, treating, and curing its problems. The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Inc. (ARVO) was established in 1928 in Washington, DC by a consortium of 73 ophthalmologists. Approximately 45% of members are located in more than 75 countries outside of the United States. The membership is composed of individuals from several disciplines, including both clinical and fundamental researchers. The ARVO Foundation for Eye Research, founded in 2001, provides financial support for innovative research, educational programmes, and outreach efforts conducted by ARVO. The objective is to act as a worldwide catalyst for innovation, workforce enhancement, and cooperation in the realm of vision research. The future generation of eye and vision researchers is supported by funds obtained from corporate grants, fundraising activities, and the generosity of ARVO members.
This year ARVO was held at Seattle and was attended by 11,600 scientists from more than 60 countries. We are delighted to share that this year the contingent from UoH including the current and alumni was at its highest with 11 members. These included two PhD scholars (Dr. Krishnasri and Jyothi Attem) and two faculty members Senior Prof. Geeta K Vemuganti, and Dr. Shiva Ram Male who presented their research work at ARVO-2024, Seattle from May-5th to May -9th -2024. Prof Geeta K Vemuganti also has an invited talk at the ARVO Education course on Lab Leadership: Your future as a Principal Investigator
Dr. Krishnasri Padamandala (18MOPH03), Alumni of PhD Health sciences of the School of Medical Sciences presented her thesis work title: Thriving beyond Diagnosis: Quality of Life of Retinoblastoma Survivors: QoL_RB_India_Study. Dr. Krishnasri worked under the Research supervision of Senior Prof. Geeta K Vemuganti and co-supervisors Dr. Santosh G Honavar, from Centre for Sight Eye Hospital, and Dr.Surya Durga Prasad M, Assistant Professor School of Medical Sciences. Currently, Dr. Krishnasri is working as an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Research and Development at the Department of Optometry, University Institute of Allied Health Sciences Chandigarh University, (Mohali), Punjab.
UoH alumni included Dr Rohini N Sayuj, ex PhD scholar from UoH is currently doing post-doctoral fellowship in University of Pennsylvania. Another project post doc Dr Induvahi from UoH under Prof Geeta K Vemuganti is doing her second PDF from University of Arizona.
There were students from 5 integrated M.Sc (OVS) students, alumni of School of Medical sciences – who are doing PhDs from University of Alabama, University of Houston, University of Rochester , University of Texas, University of Indiana. Dr Anil, a PhD Scholar from School of Life sciences, under Prof Anand K Kondapi is currently a faculty at Harvard Med school- he also presented his work at ARVO
