Dr. Subbarao M Gavaravarapu, an alumnus of University of Hyderabad (UoH) and presently a Scientist at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has been was awarded the Gujarat Science Academy (GSA) Award for creating awareness on the field of science and research, science communication. Dr. Subbarao did his MA-Communication in 1996-98 and later did his PhD in Health Communication in 2004-10 under the guidance of Prof. Vinod Pavarala at the department of Communication, S N School of Arts & Communication.

Prof. Bimla Buti, Buti Foundation has instituted this award – GSA annually selects researchers at the international level and presents this award. At present, Dr. Subbarao has played a key role in science communication with almost 80 publications and 10 book chapters in the fields of medicine, nutrition and food safety, and has also made many short films to create awareness on topics such as food safety and nutrition.
Dr. Subbarao has won awards from National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Royal Society of Public Health, ICMR, American Society of Nutrition, Nutrition Society of India and is associated with a large number of nutritional health awareness programs.
