The 2nd International Day of Yoga was celebrated at University of Hyderabad (UoH) on June 21, 2016 at the Yoga Centre. Prof. P. Appa Rao, Vice-Chancellor who was the chief guest for the programme said that, yoga should be the way of life for health and vitality. He also stressed the importance of yoga curriculum in the regular studies and stated that it should be a part of day-to-day life of all individuals.

Dr. V.V.B.N. Rao, yoga expert and resource person on yoga said that “The art of practicing yoga helps in controlling an individual’s mind, body and soul. It brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve a peaceful body & mind and also helps to manage stress and anxiety and keeps you relaxed”. Dr. Rao said that, it also helps in increasing flexibility, muscle strength and body tone. It improves respiration, energy and vitality. He further opined, “practicing yoga might seem like just stretching, but it can do much more for your body from the way you feel, look and move.”

Gold Medalist in National Yoga and Culture Federation Championships were also invited for demonstration which was extremely resourceful and was the centre of attraction. University Students have also demonstrated Yogasanas.

The general Yoga Protocol by AYUSH was practiced by all the participants with Yogasanas. Several yoga posters were exhibited in the Yoga Hall for the participants. A classical dance performance by Ms. Srividhya, a National Yoga medalist was highly appreciated and Mr. Shiva Stuti Kuchipudi dance by UoH students received thunderous applause.

On the event of 2nd International Day of Yoga an essay writing competition was also conducted on the topic “Relevance of Yoga in prevention of lifestyle diseases”. Yogasana competition has organised and prizes/certificates were given to the winners and participation certificates for the participants. A total of 130 participants including faculty, students and staff took part in the programme.
