The School of Life Sciences (SLS), University of Hyderabad (UoH) in collaboration with Krishna Institute of medical sciences (KIMS) and Brain and spine society (BASS) organized a neuroendoscopy course on “Neuroendoscopy Mastery: From Basics to Clinical Practice 18th and 19th January 2025.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. T.P Radhakrishnan, Vice Chancellor (in-charge) with a welcome address by Prof. P Prakash Babu (School of Life Sciences and workshop organiser), in the esteemed presence of Prof. Anand Kondapi (Dean, SLS), Dr. Manas Panigrahi (neurosurgeon, KIMS; workshop organiser) who introduced the participants to the basic theme of the workshop and guests of honour Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao (Managing director, KIMS Hospital) and Prof. Dr. K V R Sastry (Senior Neurosurgeon, Head of Department of Neurosurgery (Rtd), NIMHANS, Bangalore).

Prof. Radhakrishnan stressed on the need to expand collaboration with basic scientists in different disciplines. He further expressed that the University of Hyderabad is always in the forefront in collaborative research.

The guest of honour Dr. Bhaskar Rao appreciated the initiatives taken by the University in promoting the collaboration with the doctors of the KIMS. He further acknowledged the University for recognising the KIMS faculty as the supervisors for the PhD scholars.

He indicated that the KIMS would like to have further collaboration in various academic programmes.

Dr. KVR Sastry emphasized on the continuous learning to enhance skills. Prof. (Dr.) Manas Panigrahi course organizer, KIMS, briefed on the workshop and how many neurosurgeons across the country and some from abroad participated. Prof. K. Arun Kumar, Head, Department of Animal Biology proposed vote of thanks to the guests and the participants.

With this began a day of insightful talks, the aim of which was to familiarize the participants to techniques ranging from basic to advanced surgical procedures. Various experts from renowned hospitals in India including KIMS (Hyderabad), Global Hospitals (Mumbai), Anu Institute of Neuroscience (Vijayawada), AIG Hospitals (Hyderabad), Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Hyderabad), Care Hospitals (Hyderabad), Kamineni Hospitals (Hyderabad),  Yashodhara Hospital (Solapur) and  University Hospital of Saarland, Germany; and University of Pretoria, South Africa, introduced the participants to endoscopy instrumentation, presented cases of simple and complex hydrocephalus, suprasellar cyst, parenchymal tumours and advised on care and maintenance of surgical instruments.

The participants also learnt hand-eye coordination using fruits and vegetables before working with animals.

The following day the participants put their learnings to practice and tried their hands on neuroendoscopy using models and animals under the expert guidance of Prof. Dr. Joachim Oertel (Medical Director, University Hospital of Saarland, Germany), and Prof. Llewellyn Padayachy (Head of Department of Neurosurgery, University of Pretoria, South Africa) using instruments provided by the workshop education partner Aesculap. Overall, the workshop proved to be a success with the participants being able to perform complex neuroendoscopic manoeuvres.
