Prof. Hiroshi Amano, 2014 Nobel Laureate in Physics and Director of Akasaki Research Center, Nagoya University, Japan delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Blue LEDs and Transformative Electronics for Developing Sustainable Smart Society’ as a part of ‘Hyderabad Lecture Series’ (HLS) organized by the University of Hyderabad on 3rd January, 2018 at the Savitribai Phule Auditorium (formerly DST).
Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad extended a warm welcome to Prof. Amano by presenting a memento and shawl. He also welcomed other distinguished scientists and experts from the Telangana Academy of Sciences, Hyderabad, faculty members and the students present at the event.
Recognizing the contribution of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India in conducting HLS, he said, “We are thankful for the generous support offered by IRDAI for conducting the series of lectures, which bring together experts from various parts of the world to Hyderabad and make knowledge available.”
Prof. Hiroshi Amano started his speech by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and further elaborated on his work and journey of becoming a Nobel Laureate. He extensively spoke about earlier researches and inventions in the lighting industry, his research under the supervision of Prof. Isamu Akasaki, a Japanese physicist and a recipient of 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics and the breakthrough invention of efficient blue light emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources.
During the lecture, Prof. Amano also emphasized on issues of concern such as availability of safe water to all, Internet of Energy, electricity consumption and how technology can help in bringing a valuable shift in the world and developing a sustainable smart society. Towards the end, he called for the young researches, students, partners and inventors to join his team in innovating new solutions.
Prof. Amano described the journey of fabricating the Gallium Nitride LED when most researchers have given up because of large lattice mismatch between Gallium Nitride and Sapphire substrate by using a buffer layer. This solved a long standing challenge in creating a Blue LEDs and thereon to white LED for which he received the Nobel Prize in 2014 along with I. Akasaki and S. Nakamura. The white LED using this technology has revolutionized display technology and energy efficient technology. He further explained how this technology can meet the needs of smart and sustainable technologies.
Prof. Amano described the state of technology in fabrication of small and efficient LEDs for display applications. He emphasized the need to make the technologies more cost-effective. He talked about how the Gallium Nitride based Ultraviolet sources technology have helped in water purification. He further explained how Gallium Nitride based devices will play a big role in Internet of things , 5 G communications and Internet of Energy which will include wireless powering of devices over 10s of meters.
Prof. Amano even took a few questions related to blue LED invention and its application in the field from experts and students present at the venue.
The Lecture was presided over by Prof. Appa Rao Podile and attended by many students and academicians from the twin cities including Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University, Prof. S Ramachandram, Mr. Nilesh Sathe, Member (Life) from IRDAI along with his colleagues. Students from few schools also attended. Prof. Bindu A Bambah, Dean, School of Physics at UoH introduced the speaker while Prof. S Srinath from School of Physics proposed the vote of thanks.
The lecture was followed by interactive session with students and faculty of UoH.
