Professor B S Ramakrishna, a visionary leader and renowned scholar, left an indelible mark on the University of Hyderabad and the academic community. His remarkable journey, spanning over six decades, was a testament to his unwavering dedication to education, research, and innovation.
Born in 1921 in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, Prof. Ramakrishna’s academic prowess was evident from an early age. He completed his Bachelor’s degree from Andhra University and Master’s degree in Physics from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue his PhD in Acoustics from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA, in 1949.
Prof. Ramakrishna’s academic career was marked by numerous achievements. He joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering (ECE) and later became the Chairman of the ECE Department. His research contributions were significant, with groundbreaking work in acoustics, vibrations, and sound systems.
As the second Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, serving from 1980 to 1986, Prof. Ramakrishna implemented transformative changes that propelled the institution to new heights. He strengthened research infrastructure, fostered partnerships with national and international institutions, and introduced new academic programs. One of his notable achievements was the planning, design, and construction of the University’s Science Complex, administrative building, and other key infrastructure.
Under his leadership, the University of Hyderabad witnessed significant growth and development. Prof. Ramakrishna took keen interest in designing the wooden shelves for displaying journals in the Central Library. He also oversaw the selection of the University emblem through an open competition. The first convocation of the University was held on April 6, 1985, during his tenure, with 1253 students receiving their degrees.
A notable event during his tenure was the visit of the then Prime Minister, Shri Rajiv Gandhi, to the University campus in 1985. The Prime Minister inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee session of the Indian Philosophical Congress, marking a significant milestone for the University. This was the second Prime Ministerial visit to the University, following the visit of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1975.
Prof. Ramakrishna’s vision for a world-class institution drove him to establish the University as a hub for academic excellence and research innovation. His efforts were recognized by the academic community, and the University of Hyderabad became a preferred destination for students and scholars.
Prof. Ramakrishna’s legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments as Vice-Chancellor. He was a fellow of several prestigious institutions, including the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Acoustical Society of America, and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, India. He received numerous awards, including the Bhagawantham Award and the Raman Centenary Gold Medal.
Even after relinquishing office, Prof. Ramakrishna remained involved with the University, completing the acoustics design of the Savitri Bai Phule Auditorium. His passing away in 2011 was a loss to the academic community, but his legacy lives on. His remarkable life and achievements serve as a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and vision.
Till this day, Prof. Ramakrishna’s impact on the University of Hyderabad and the academic community continues to inspire future generations of scholars and researchers. His commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and institutional development has left a lasting legacy that will continue to shape the academic landscape of India.
