Professor Anunay Samanta, School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been chosen for the Professor Sadhan Basu Memorial Lecture (2017) by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi.
This Lecture, instituted in memory of Professor Sadhan Basu, a distinguished Fellow of the Academy, is awarded once in every three years for ‘outstanding contributions in Chemical Science’. The lecturership carries an honorarium and a citation. Prof. Samanta, who is the eighth recipient of this award, wishes to deliver this Lecture at University of Calcutta, which was the workplace of Prof. Basu.
Prof. Samanta joined UoH in 1990 as a Lecturer after his Ph.D (1987) from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) and a couple of years of postdoctoral assignment at the Radiation Laboratory, University of Notre Dame, USA. He became Professor in 2001. Prof. Samanta’s current research is based on sophisticated single molecule and ultrafast spectroscopic techniques. He has established state of the art facilities for this purpose at UoH and his pioneering research work in ionic liquids is recognized world-wide. He has published more than 160 papers having a total citations of around 6400 and h-index of 44. Professor Samanta has received many Awards and Fellowships. He is Fellow of all three national Science Academies of India. He is a recipient of the India Citation Award (2012) of Thomson Reuters, Raman-Mizushima Lecture Award (2014) of JSPS-DST, Silver Medal (2015) of Chemical Research Society of India, J.C. Bose National Fellowship (2010 – 2020) and Ramanna Fellowship (2007 – 2010) of DST, R.P. Mitra Memorial Lecture Award (2017) of Delhi University, A.V. Rama Rao Foundation Lecture Award (2015) of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research and K.K. Rohatgi Mukherjee Memorial Lecture Award (2010) of Jadavpur University. Prof. Samanta served in the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of Physical Chemistry A,B,C and Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters (both American Chemical Society journals). Prof. Samanta is National Coordinator of the Faculty Research Promotion Schemes of UGC since 2013 and member of the Project Advisory Committee in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry of DST (since 2013) and CSIR (since 2015). He is also serving as the Editor (Chemistry) of the Proceedings of Indian National Science Academy.
