Shilpi Mandal is a fifth year integrated MSc Mathematics student at the University of Hyderabad (UoH). At a time when her classmates are searching for a suitable place for their future studies, Shilpi has already secured quite a lot of options for her. She has been selected for admission of Ph.D. in five of the top ranked universities in the United States of America. These include Emory University, University of Virginia, University of Connecticut, University of Oklahoma and Louisiana State University. She takes a look back at the fruitful five years that she spent in UoH.

Throughout the last four years, she did various internships at prestigious universities like the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, Harischandra Institute Allahabad, IIT Indore and Central University of Tamil Nadu. “I am very grateful to the professors of these institutes. They helped me in becoming what I am today,” says Shilpi. Most recently she attended the prestigious CIMPA School in the University of Gadjah Mada in Indonesia for a two week workshop on Group Actions in Arithmetic and Geometry.

She had decided from the very beginning that she wanted to do her Ph.D.  abroad. So last year, she was completely engaged in preparing for various exams like GRE, TOEFL and in applying to various universities. Her hard work and determination took her to her dream destinations. She recalls the feedback and assistance of her seniors at UoH, who are currently pursuing various Ph.D. programmes abroad. “Also the professors in my department helped me in deciding and shortlisting the places I should apply to. Their recommendation letters proved beneficial,” adds Shilpi.

Shilpi is not overexcited about her success. “I hope to learn a lot more about the subject than I know right now,” says the passionate girl.

Back home, Shilpi’s parents are extremely happy for their daughter and have been celebrating ever since they heard the news of her admissions.
