Students of Integrated MSc. Mathematics, University of Hyderabad (UoH), under the guidance of Dr. Archana Morye had put up a stall, “Poetry of Logic”, at Hyderabad Literary Fest 2025 conducted in Sattva Knowledge City on 25th January, 2025. The stall displayed various concepts in mathematics through hands on fun activities and puzzles. The students introduced the visitors to the alluring world of Fractals through a presentation. They also displayed the beautiful patterns created by lighting tessellations. Through the picture hanging puzzle and door handle puzzle, the students told the visitors about the area of Knot Theory. A colouring puzzle inspired from the Hadwiger – Nelson problem was also included in the stall.

Visitors also took a shot on the Magic Squares puzzle, where they had to arrange numbers in a square such that the sum of every column, every row and every diagonal was equal. The Hanoi Tower puzzle, which can be solved using ideas of recursion, was another main attraction in the stall. People also enjoyed the card tricks, which demonstrated the power of counting and ordering. An activity based on the ‘Kaprekar constant’ held many children and adults spellbound accentuating the interesting properties of numbers, arithmetic operations and their patterns.
‘Poetry of Logic’ was a great success and attracted visitors of all ages: 3-year-olds, school students, adults and even 75-year-old people. They were curious about all the concepts and asked various questions. Some of them shared their childhood experience of how difficult mathematics was, and appreciated the students for showing them that Mathematics is fun. The stall received positive feedback from the visitors. In the words of one of the organizers, Dr. Somdatta Karak, “The Poetry of Logic stall put together by the students of UoH showed how math can be made accessible to everyone using hands-on fun, origami activities. It is truly commendable that the young students go out of the way to set an example for others to follow.”
Interacting with people about Mathematics and clearing doubts for the curious minds, the students who set up the stall had a useful and memorable time at HLF 2025. Last year also, Mathematics enthusiast students from UOH had put up a stall, “Language of the Universe”, in the same event and that was a success too. In addition to presenting the beauty of mathematics in a way that everyone can understand and appreciate, such activities provide the students with valuable exposure and experience.
