A National Seminar on Translation: Critical Theories and Critical Practices has been organized by the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS), University of Hyderabad (UoH) on 21-22 April 2014 in association with the Indian Council for Social Sciences Research (ICSSR). Prof. Amitabha Dasgupta, Dean, School of Humanities inaugurated the seminar while Prof. G. Uma Maheshwara Rao, Head, CALTS welcomed the dignitaries and research scholars
Prof. E.V. Ramakrishnan (Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Gujarat) gave the key-note address and this session was chaired by Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, Professor of English at UoH. Prof. Ramakrishnan spoke on the importance of Translation in the context of Kerala. He said that it cannot be understood as an activity in isolation. He also emphasized on the growth of Novel and the growth of Literature with reference to Kerala and how Translation has played a major role there in making these available to a large cross-section of people.
On this occasion Kalpana, an e-journal (http://kalpanajournal.wordpress.com/) consisting of an anthology of translated works from various Indian languages by the Research Scholars of Translation Studies was launched at the function by Prof. G. Uma Maheshwara Rao.
Manu S Kurup, PhD Research Scholar in Translation Studies talked about the e journal while R. Hari Krishnan, M.Phil Research Scholar in Translation Studies, gave a brief about the National Seminar.
The two-day seminar saw some interesting presentations and debates on the various aspects of Translation, Language, and Communication etc.
