Vikram-S, India’s first privately built rocket by Skyroot Aerospace Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad was launched on 18 November 2022 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota. The mission for the rocket launch has been named as ‘Prarambh’, meaning beginning. The rocket has been names Vikram-S, as a tribute to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is considered as father of India’s space programme.
The Vikram-S Rocket is a single-stage solid fuelled, sub-orbital rocket developed over two years by incorporating advanced technologies that include carbon composite structures and 3D-printed components. The launch of India’s first privately developed rocket was a technology demonstration flight to showcase the capabilities. The rocket helped to validate the technologies that are to be used in the subsequent Vikram-1 orbital vehicle of Skyroot. Vikram-S is equipped with a gross lift-off mass of 545 kg, and a payload mass of 80 kg. It carried three customer payloads which measured and validated certain flight parameters and payload integration processes.
Sai Ravi Teja, an alumni of UoH, CEOAS, works with the Avionics Team at Skyroot Aerospace. This team is responsible for design, development and testing of all the electronics sub-systems of the vehicle. During the launch campaign Avionics team worked on the electrical integration of the vehicle and looked after the pre-launch checkout operations, ground segment operations which play a crucial role during the launch.
