The Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation (CALTS), School of Humanities, organized a School Level talk titled WORDS MATTER: NAVIGATING SENSITIVE LANGUAGE IN THE MEDIA on 4th February 2025, funded by the IoE, University of Hyderabad. The talk was delivered by the eminent scholar in audiovisual translation, Prof. Jorge Diaz-Cintas, from CenTras, University College, London. Prof. Diaz-Cintas has been appointed as Chair-Professor, CALTS by IoE for a period of one month.
The talk opened with critical comments the Dean, School of Humanities regarding the importance and significance of being aware and sensitive to the power of words, in general, and language, in particular. After the opening remarks, the Head, CALTS, introduced the eminent speaker to the audience.
Prof. Diaz-Cintas opened his talk with the famous words of Arundhati Roy, “There is really no such thing as the voiceless’. There are only the deliberately silenced or the preferably unheard.” He pointed out the diversity, equity and power challenges that arise with regard to accessing language and understand the same through media, the politics that control the dissemination of information and practices that either reinforce or resist those.
The event closed with the vote of thanks that also expressed gratitude towards the Vice Chancellor, the IoE Director, and the Dean, School of Humanities for their constant and timely support in conducting the event. The talk was well attended by faculty members and students from all over the School.
