The Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation (CALTS), School of Humanities, University of Hyderabad (UoH) organized a ‘One-Day Workshop on Forensic Phonetics’ on 27th February 2025, funded by IoE.
At the outset, the coordinator of the workshop, Dr. Morey Dipak Tryambak, Associate Professor, CALTS, introduced the theme of the workshop and expressed the need to explore the role of speech analysis in legal investigations and train the students in the field of Forensic Linguistics/ Forensic Phonetics.
The Resource Person for the workshop, Dr. Didla Grace Suneetha, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Phonetics, The EFL University, Hyderabad, conducted two sessions during the workshop. The first session focused on the ‘Fundamentals of Forensic Phonetics’, and the second session was dedicated to hands-on experience with PRAAT, which is instrumental in carrying out ‘Acoustic Analysis of Forensic Speech Samples’. About 140 students, research scholars and faculty members participated and trained in the workshop, and the program concluded with a post-workshop discussion on career prospects in the field of Forensic phonetics.
During the last session, the Head of CALTS, Prof. S. Arulmozi, thanked the Resource Person for accepting the invitation and introducing the students to the emerging field. He also expressed his gratitude towards the Vice Chancellor, the IoE director, and the Dean, School of Humanities for their constant and timely support in conducting the workshop.
