The World Philosophy day was celebrated at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on 19 November 2015.
Many alumni from the department of Philosophy were present to listen to Prof. S.G. Kulkarni, Prof. R.C. Pradhan and Prof. Amitabah Dasgupta, former teachers at UoH, Prof. Syed Sayeed (Professor of Philosophy, EFLU Hyderabad), and Dr. P P Aly Muhammed​ as well as other speakers including students.
Alumnus Dr. Aly Muhammed PP spoke on the Role of Philosophy in Life. He highlighted the irony of ethical commitment as it is articulated in the works of Plato, Wittgenstein, Davidson and Derrida. Prof. Kulkarni emphasized on the need of Philosophy to be more representative in nature so that it will not be dominated by the western traditions of Philosophy. Prof. Pradhan is of the view that Metaphysics still has to play a pivotal role in our Philosophical deliberations. The point which Prof. Amitabha Dasgupta stressed was the role language played in Philosophy in the twentieth century whereby everything Philosophical is conceived in Linguistic terms. Prof. Sayeed explained the current practices in Philosophy with reference to India and the West and argued that we have to take a re-look at the ways in which Philosophy is practiced in India.
Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor was the Chief Guest at the function. In his address the VC stressed the importance of Philosophy in general and how it is to be related to other disciplines in general and Science in particular.
