An important milestone of the University of Hyderabad in community service and its outreach

It is a great pleasure to share an important milestone of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) in community service and its outreach. We are extremely happy to share that one of our NSS volunteers, Mr. Yalala Praveen Kumar, got selected for Indira Gandhi NSS Award for the year 2015-16. He received this award from the Hon’ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee at New Delhi on 19 November 2016. Mr. Praveen Kumar has represented the University of Hyderabad at various international, national and state level camps organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. After his participation in Republic Day Parade Camp in New Delhi, Mr. Praveen got selected for State Level NSS Award in 2015. Mr. Praveen is currently pursuing Master of Philosophy in the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, School of Social Sciences in the University.

The UoH having its potential academic background in teaching and research, also engages in community service under the banner of National Service Scheme (NSS). National Service Scheme (NSS) has been established in the University of Hyderabad by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Since its inception, the NSS has been actively engaged in community services within and outside its campus. The NSS in the campus has five NSS Units, and each Unit consists of 100 student volunteers. These volunteers are from different courses such as Integrated Masters, M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. covering across all subjects in Social Sciences, Humanities, Sciences, Fine Arts, Management, Medical Sciences and so on.

The NSS has adopted five villages in the vicinity of its campus and is actively engaged in community development activities by identifying a few neighbouring villages, namely, Tellapur, Ambedkar Colony, Indira Nagar, Gopanpally Thanda, Masjid Band (Ranga Reddy District). Village camps to increase awareness on issues such as environment, cleanliness & health have been conducted in these places.

The NSS has been organizing various activities such as awareness rallies on HIV/AIDS, Pulse Polio, Literacy, National Voters’ Day, Anti-Drug Awareness Programme, National Youth Day, Airtel Hyderabad Marathon, VOICE4Girls Internship Programme, International Yoga Day, Sadbhavana Day, Khadi Promotion Day, Vigilance Awareness Week, Old Age Home visits, election duties, World Environment Day, Swachh Bharath Abhiyan, Rastriya Ektha Diwas etc.

A total 142 NSS volunteers have represented the UoH at various national and state level NSS camps organised by the Department of Higher Education in the State and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Centre since 2014 in different places such as Bagalkote, Rajahmundry, Nagpur, Chhattisgarh, New Delhi, Raipur, Shivagangothri, Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Warangal, Manali, Bhubaneswar, Baroda, Dharwad, Davanagere across India. The NSS in the campus, in collaboration with different agencies and various government departments, have implemented important government initiatives to benefit the community.

The NSS in the University has also initiated some of the inter-state workshops on national integration by involving the NSS volunteers from various Universities and colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The University appreciates our NSS Coordinator, Dr. V. Srinivasa Rao, who is behind this great achievement for his excellent motivation skills and commitment. Last, but not the least, we appreciate all the staff and student volunteers for their constant cooperation and engagement in the community endeavor.
