Suyashi, a Ph.D. research scholar from Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies at University of Hyderabad presented a paper titled “Cluster-dependent Epenthesis- English Loanword Adaptation in Varhadi, Mappila Malayalam, and Angika” at the 37th South Asian Languages Analysis Roundtable (SALA-37). The conference was hosted by the prestigious Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca’Foscari University of Venice in Venice, Italy from October 4th– 7th , 2023. Suyashi is pursuing her research under the supervision of Dr. Morey Dipak Tryambak, a faculty in CALTS.
The paper examined the nativisation of English loanwords and studied the how the English consonant clusters were treated and adapted in the said three language varieties. The presentation was well received by the Chair and she received positive feedback along with some insightful comments. She also received the Institute of Eminence (IoE) Travel Grant for attending this conference in Italy.
