The School of Economics, University of Hyderabad (UoH), successfully organized a special public lecture by Prof. Badri Narayanan Gopalakrishnan from University of Washington – Seattle, USA, on January 24, 2019 at Room LH3F1, Dr. Zakir Hussain Lecture Hall Complex.
While speaking on the topic of Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modeling, Professor Gopalakrishnan introduced the concepts of general equilibrium, partial equilibrium and Walras Law before explaining various issues of CGE models or applied general equilibrium (AGE) models. Various components of CGE model like agents, factor endowments, commodities, markets, equilibrium conditions and welfare analysis were discussed. Few examples of CGE models like GTAP, GLOBE, LINKAGE, USAGE etc. were discussed. He said that GTAP is the only publicly freely available CGE model. He showed an introduction to GTAP model, working with RunGTAP and GTAP data base. Various advantages of CGE models (‘when and where to use CGE models’) compared to other tools were discussed.
The seminar was chaired by Prof. Naresh Kumar Sharma, Dean, School of Economics, UoH. Prof. Phanindra Goyari, faculty in the School of Economics, coordinated this lecture and introduced the speaker to the participants. The seminar ended with the formal vote of thanks by Mr. Utsav Bhadra.
About the speaker:
Dr. Badri Narayanan Gopalakrishnan is currently an Economist, wearing three hats – (i) Affiliate Professor, University of Washington –Seattle, USA, (ii) Lead Specialist –Economist at McKinsey & Company, and (iii) Co-founder and Partner at Infinite Sum Modeling. He holds a PhD degree in Economics from IGIDR Mumbai. He has been teaching courses of Global Economic Analysis, Economic Modeling, Computable General Equilibrium Models, International Trade, Econometrics, Environmental Economics etc. He has been guiding PhD scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows. His research areas of interests are broadly in CGE and Simulation Modeling, Agricultural Economics, Blockchain Economics and Strategy, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Health Economics, Applied Econometrics & Time series, International Trade, etc. Besides 5 books and popular media articles, he has published extensively in high quality international refereed journals like British Medical Journal: Tobacco Control, Agricultural Economics, Energy Economics, Economic Modelling, Applied Economics, Applied Economics Letters, Information Technology and management, Economic Systems Research, Journal of Food and Agricultural Economics, Engineering Design Graphics Journal, Economic and Political Weekly etc. He has visited many countries of the world for academic purposes.
