Pramod K Nayar of the Department of English has just published Liberal Arts and the Public Good: The Humanities and the University. Published by Viva (which has published two of his textbooks), the volume brings together essays published in various fora over the last few years. These cover domains such as higher education policy; classroom and pedagogy; and literature, aesthetics and the Humanities. The subjects include University rankings, the neoliberal effect on public universities, public universities and accountability, digital pedagogies, academic freedom, and entrepreneurial and ‘world class’ universities, Literary Studies, poetry, the ‘value’ of Humanities, among others. As an exercise in the Public Humanities, the volume’s postscript focuses not on the ‘deemed university’ but the ‘doomed university’.
