The paper proposes the integration of the energy consumption perspective into the domain of literature on public spending. The study performed an appraisal of the impact of public spending in transport infrastructure, the performance of transport infrastructure, and economic growth on energy consumption of the transport sector in India for the period 1987 to 2019. The inference of positive impact of economic growth and performance of transport infrastructure on energy consumption indicates demand-driven factors significant whereas higher spending in transport infrastructure is found to abate the energy use.
