Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad (UoH) has recently launched the online course “Environmental Sociology” on the UGC-SWAYAM platform. Design and development of the course is sponsored by UGC through the project “Development of Non-Technology PG Degree Online Courses for SWAYAM”, with a grant of Rs.13.50 lakhs. While the lecture videos for the course are being produced by E-learning centre of University of Hyderabad, on-line delivery and learning management are being done through the SWAYAM platform. The course is coordinated by Dr. Satyapriya Rout, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, UoH. Lecture videos for the online course are being contributed by faculties from the departments of Sociology, Anthropology, Regional Studies and Economics.
This online course aims to explore the relationship between human society and the larger natural environment and the social roots as well as social responses to environmental problems. Besides, it examines the emergence of the concept of sustainable development, environmental conflicts and movements, and various approaches to resource use as varied responses to environmental risks. The course gives due importance to environmental issues, concerns and debates that have emerged in India and around the world in recent years. It also discusses the environmental history and the rise of environmentalism in contemporary societies.
The registration for the on-line course on “Environmental Sociology”, began on 15th July 2019, and is open till 31st August 2019. The course will come to an end in 31st October 2019. This is a 4 credit course, which is being delivered over a period of 15 weeks. The course adopts a four quadrant instructional design method involving: (i) video lecturers, (ii) e-content and power point (PPT) slides, (iii) further readings and discussion forum, (iv) assessments. As of 19th August, 2019, a total of 873 learners have registered for the course.
