The Department of Sociology, School of Social Sciences (SSS), University of Hyderabad (UoH) in association with the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law, Hyderabad and SOAS, University of London organized a three-day international conference on the theme, ‘State and Society in Contemporary India’ in the Department of Sociology, SSS, UoH during March 24 to 26, 2022.

The highlight of the conference was a special lecture by Prof. T. K. Oommen that focused on the intricate relationship between state, society and nation. The conference was also an occasion to honour the singular contribution of Prof. T. K. Oommen to the development of sociology as a discipline and political sociology as a field of enquiry. The participants included key sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists and historians from different universities and institutions of the country. Citizenship and orientation of the Indian state, identity mobilizations, charisma and social movements, domination and authority, the socio-political and cultural processes of otherisation, law, its framing and manifestations were some of the issues that were deliberated at length during the conference.

Earlier inaugural addresses were delivered by Prof. Sujata Patel and Prof. Nandini Sundar and the conference witnessed enthusiastic participation of students and faculty of UoH and NALSAR.
