The Zayed University invited Dr. V.J. Varghese, Associate Professor in the Department of History as a Visiting Scholar. He will be associated with the College of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Dubai campus of the university during his visit from mid-December 2023 to mid-January 2024.
Dr. Varghese has also been invited by the Zayed University to join their research team as the Co-Principal Investigator in an ongoing research project titled “Education Consultancies and Changing Brokerage in the Migration Industry in the UAE.” As a specialist in migration studies, the University expects Dr. Varghese to enrich the project with his expertise by enhancing the quality and impact of the study. Dr. David Sancho from the College of Interdisciplinary Studies is the Principal Investigator of this project and has been nominated by the University to be the faculty host to the visiting scholar. During the visit Dr. Varghese will be presenting his research and exploring possibilities of future research collaborations in the UAE.
Dr. V.J. Varghese is currently leading a major collaborative research project, supported by the Institution of Eminence (IoE) fund at the University of Hyderabad, on “Brokering Mobility: Migration Brokerage between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries” and the invitations from Zayed University allow him to expand the international collaborations in the project.
Dr. Varghese has been invited last year by the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) as a Scholar-in-Residence in recognition of his interest and contributions in the field of modern Kerala history. Earlier, he was Charles Wallace India Trust Fellow at Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), University of Edinburgh (2018); Research Excellence Visiting Fellow at the Central European University, Budapest (2017-18); Visiting Senior Research Fellow, at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (2014) and an ESRC Visiting Fellow at the University of Sussex (2010-11).
