The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has not dampened the enthusiasm of those seeking to study at University of Hyderabad, an Institution of Eminence, with the University receiving a record number of 62,853 applications this year for 2456 seats in 132 postgraduate and research programmes. The number of applications received last year was about 56,000.
Commenting on the spurt in applications this year, Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice Chancellor, UoH said, “It’s gratifying to note that UoH is a preferred destination for students to pursue higher education and research. Not only have the number of applications within India increased, the number of foreign students applying has also gone up more than 20% this year. The Institution of Eminence tag has certainly helped the UoH in creating a positive image among the student community who want to be part of the institution. The University will ensure that affordable education is made available at global standards.”
Of the total number of applications, about 60% are from students belonging to SC, ST, OBC communities, reflecting the perception of the University not only as a centre of excellence, but also as an inclusive space for all. While an almost equal number of men and women are among the applicants, the University has received 11 applications from candidates who have identified themselves as transgender. In terms of geographical spread, about 46% applicants are from Telangana, followed by Kerala (12%), Delhi (8%), AP and West Bengal (6% each), and Odisha (5%).
The number of applications received course-wise is topped by I.M.Sc. (5-yr Integrated) Sciences (MA/PY/CH/SB/AG) -6189 application followed by M.Sc. Chemistry – 3847, M.Sc. Physics – 3161, I.M.A. (5-yr Integrated) Social Sciences (EC/HS/PS/SL/AN) – 2953, M.A. English – 2536 and M.C.A. – 2946.
The entrance exam schedule will be notified once the situation with COVID-19 improves and it is conducive for holding the same.
