Commissioner Ahmed Humed Abdella, a Ph.D. scholar in the Department of Political Science at the University of Hyderabad, has completed the prestigious International Leadership Training Program titled “Ensuring Peace Through Development” hosted by the Global Learning & Research Centre in Dubai, UAE, from October 14–21, 2025.

Ahmed is currently pursuing his doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Venkatesu E. His dissertation, “Contemporary Challenges of Afar Elders’ Mediation Practices in Conflict Resolution: A Study in the Afar National Regional State of Ethiopia,” focuses on revitalizing traditional mediation systems and integrating them into modern peacebuilding frameworks.

In addition to his academic excellence, Ahmed serves as the Head of the Peace and Security Bureau of the Afar National Regional State, Ethiopia. Through this key leadership role, he works extensively with national and international institutions on conflict prevention, security stabilization, and community resilience initiatives.

The leadership program gathered senior peace and security leaders from selected regions of Ethiopia to explore development as a foundation for lasting peace, inclusive governance, and conflict-resolution strategies.

As part of the field learning component, the delegation visited all seven emirates of the UAE, observing how internal harmony, fair resource distribution, and visionary development planning have transformed the nation into a globally competitive hub for trade, investment, and innovation. These observations provided practical insights into how unity and strategic development can drive national progress.

The program also highlighted India’s experience as a successful model of unity in diversity. Despite its multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-religious society, India has demonstrated strong national cohesion and remarkable economic growth. The lessons drawn from India’s federal governance system, constitutional inclusiveness, and development policies provide valuable reference points for Ethiopia’s own peace and state-building efforts.

During the closing ceremony, Ahmed was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation presented by H.E. Temesgen Tiruneh, Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, acknowledging his outstanding contribution to advancing peace and community security in the Afar region and beyond.

Reflecting on the training, Ahmed emphasized that the new knowledge, comparative experiences, and global networking opportunities will significantly enhance both his Ph.D. research and his efforts in policymaking and peace leadership within Ethiopia.

The University of Hyderabad proudly congratulates Ahmed on this distinguished international achievement and extends its best wishes for his continued success as a scholar and leader dedicated to promoting stability, unity, and development-driven peace.
