In a unique cross-disciplinary collaboration, University of Hyderabad (UoH) alumni Dr. Rathan Kumar (Centre for Comparative Literature, School of Humanities) and Poornama Chary Kagithala (Master of Fine Arts, Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication) have launched a digital initiative exploring and documenting England’s literary, philosophical, and social heritage.

Combining scholarly research with visual storytelling, the duo produces short documentaries that offer nuanced perspectives on landmark figures and historic spaces.

Spotlighting Literary Icons & Historical Heritage

Their broadcast content focuses on key cultural and intellectual figures who shaped global thought, including:

  • Literary Figures: Deep dives into the lives and settings of William Shakespeare and John Keats.
  • Philosophical Thinkers: Explorations of political theorists such as Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin.
  • Cultural Spaces: A systematic visual study of London’s historic pubs—examining their architectural heritage, symbolic value, and role in community life across the United Kingdom.

Global Reach & Scholarly Impact

Disseminated across international broadcasting channels and digital platforms like YouTube, these short features have gained traction across Europe, the Middle East, North America, the United Kingdom, and among the global Indian diaspora. By presenting verified historical facts within accessible formats, their project brings lesser-known dimensions of British cultural history to a global audience.

A Seamless Academic-Creative Partnership

The success of the series relies on a balance of narrative and visual expertise:

  • Dr. Rathan Kumar brings a background in comparative literature to the voice-over narration and historical research, providing contextual depth.
  • Poornama Chary Kagithala, an accomplished visual artist (MFA, UoH), directs the cinematography and visual composition, using carefully selected locations and framing to enhance the narrative.

Together, Dr. Rathan Kumar and Poornama Chary continue to showcase how academic research at UoH translates into compelling, public-facing digital media.
