Anjana M. Nair, a doctoral candidate under the supervision of Prof. Suchandra Ghosh at the Department of History, School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH) presented a paper in the 28th European Conference on South Asian Studies (ECSAS), held in Heidelberg (Germany), from 1st to 4th October 2025 at Heidelberg’s Neue Universität. The conference was organized and hosted by the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg.

Her paper titled ‘Public Stages, Privy Chambers: Theatricality and Dual Performativity of Gaṇikā-Kulastrī Dynamics in Early Medieval Sanskrit Kāvyas (4th to 8th century CE)’ was presented in the panel ‘Performing Womanhood: Women’s Language in Premodern South Asia’ of the conference. Participating in the conference enabled Anjana to engage with eminent scholars within the field of South Asian studies, receive critical feedback for her work, and situate her research within evolving global debates on gendered performance, thereby sharpening both the theoretical rigour and comparative horizons of her dissertation.
ECSAS 2025 served as a significant forum to discuss current research and scholarship on interdisciplinary topics relating to South Asia within the humanities and social sciences.
