On March 9, 2026, around 60 Baal Mitra Fellows from Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, visited the University of Hyderabad (UoH). These fellows primarily first-generation learners from tribal, LWE-affected regions participated in a structured academic interaction designed to demystify higher education and broaden their professional aspirations. The visit provided a comprehensive look at world-class academic infrastructure and fostered dialogue between rural youth and the university community.

Key Highlights of the Visit:
- School of Life Sciences (SLS)
The fellows were introduced to the frontiers of research. Faculty members explained how science addresses real-world issues like health and agriculture.
- Engagement: Fellows visited state-of-the-art laboratories.
- Impact: For many, this was the first time seeing high-level research equipment, bridging the gap between textbook science and practical application.

- College for Integrated Studies (CIS)
Given that many fellows will be completing Class 12, the CIS was a focal point of the visit.
- Orientation: The session covered the 5-year Integrated Masters programs, which allow students to transition smoothly from school to postgraduate studies.
- Discussion: A meaningful dialogue was held regarding entrance pathways, reservation policies for tribal students, and the support systems available for rural youth on campus.

- Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Library
The students visited and saw the IGM Library.
- Facility Tour: They explored the vast digital and physical archives of one of India’s premier academic libraries.
- Knowledge Transfer: The fellows observed professional cataloging and reading room management, providing them with ideas to implement in their own local community centres.

Impact and Future Outlook
The visit served as a transformative experience for the students. By interacting with a diverse student body and faculty, the “intimidation factor” of a premier national institution was replaced by a sense of belonging and possibility.
“This visit has inspired many of our fellows… we hope that in the coming years, more young people from our program will feel encouraged to explore opportunities at the university.” — Mr. Dheeraj; Bachpan Banao Representative
