The Department of Plant Sciences, University of Hyderabad, celebrated National Science Day with an insightful lecture and the much-anticipated revival of BioEspresso, the department’s monthly magazine.

National Science Day, observed annually on February 28, commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman and serves as a reminder of the significance of scientific inquiry and innovation. To mark the occasion, the department organized a special lecture on “Science of Plant Genome Size: Movers and Shakers” delivered by Prof. Arjula R. Reddy, Founding Head of the Department and Chairman and Director of ATGC Biotech. The keynote talk provided valuable insights into plant genome size variation and its evolutionary, functional, and applied implications, sparking engaging discussions among students and faculty.

The event began with opening remarks by Prof. S. Rajagopal, Head of the Department of Plant Sciences. He appreciated the students’ efforts in celebrating National Science Day and taking the initiative to revive BioEspresso. He emphasized that such student-led initiatives foster a spirit of scientific curiosity, collaboration, and creative engagement within the academic community.

A major highlight of the event was the revival of BioEspresso, the department’s magazine, spearheaded by the first-year MSc and IMSc students. A Magazine Committee was constituted among them to oversee the publication, ensuring its sustainability as a platform for research discussions, student achievements, creative expressions, and faculty perspectives. The inaugural issue, themed “Roots to Tomorrow: Inspiring the Future of Science“, features a diverse range of content, including research highlights, interviews, scientific essays, poetry, illustrations, and student experiences.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members, fostering discussions on the evolving landscape of plant sciences and the importance of student-led academic initiatives. With the successful relaunch of BioEspresso, the department looks forward to nurturing a tradition of continuous knowledge-sharing and engagement in future editions.
