The School of Management Studies, University of Hyderabad has been offering Two Year – Full time MBA (Healthcare and Hospital Management) Programme since 2008 which was inaugurated by Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, former President of India. The School believes in exposing the students to the latest trends and experts with domain knowledge in the field and organizes events/seminars for the same. As part of the series of events and crystal jubilee celebrations, the school organized a one day National Seminar on “Emerging Trends in Healthcare and Hospital Management towards Sustainable Healthcare” on 28th October 2014.

The seminar has provided a forum for identifying and explains key trends in healthcare, green initiatives in hospitals and setting up a research agenda / road map for sustainable healthcare system which focus on optimization of human health that has an ecological base which is environmentally, economically and socially viable.

Around 120 students of MBA (Healthcare & Hospital Management), from Apollo Institute, Deccan College, Administrative Staff College of India, KL University and MPH (Master of Public Health) students from the University of Hyderabad attended the seminar, along with a dozen professionals from the healthcare industry. The seminar is very much relevant for the students as top notch professionals from healthcare industry have shared their experience and gave valuable inputs to the students to build their career in healthcare industry.

The seminar started with a welcome from the Dean of the School, Prof V.Sita. Sri U.K. Anantha Padmanabhan, Group President of Rainbow Hospitals has delivered the inaugural address and emphasized on the challenges in the healthcare industry. Three technical sessions have focused on some of the emerging areas in healthcare like Technology and Innovations, Insurance, Knowledge Management, Risk management, Role of TPA’s, Patients safety.

In the inaugural event, an edited book titled ‘Healthcare and Hospital Management- Contemporary Issues and Challenges’ edited by Dr. GVRK. Acharyulu, Prof. Bhimaraya Metri (Dean, IMI, New Delhi), Dr. Kalyan Viswanath Reddy (Hail University, Saudi Arabia) was released by the chief guest U.K. Anantha Padmanabhan. The book is a well compiled volume with topics covering the contemporary issues and strategies such as Human Resources, Quality & Accreditation, Information Technology, Medical Tourism and Health Insurance. The book is a unique resource to researchers, students and professionals working in healthcare organizations.

It is interesting to note that nine papers have been presented by the students on the titles: green hospitals, green marketing, green practices, innovations towards a healthy rural India, Quality & patient safety, Information technology in Insurance and m-health. The last session was a panel discussion where eminent experts in the healthcare industry discussed on various key areas for developing a road map to sustainability of healthcare.

The seminar was well attended and academic contributions from Prof. V. Sita , Dean of the School , Prof. V. Venkata Ramana, Prof. B. Raja Shekhar, Dr. G.V.R.K. Acharyulu (Seminar Coordinator), Dr. Chetan Srivastava, Dr. D. Srinivas Kumar and Dr. K. Ramulu made it more enriching for the participants.
