Curiosity, excitement, and a thirst for hands-on learning marked the day as our final-year Master of Optometry students from the School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad, set out for an industrial visit to the LVPEI BostonSight Lens Manufacturing Lab at the LVPEI Centre for Innovation, Kismatpur branch. The visit was steered by Associate Professor Dr. Nagaraju Konda, who ensured the students gained an insider’s view of how innovation shapes modern eye care through the advanced contact lens teaching module.

The session began with an engaging talk by Mr. Ravi Kumar Matam, Fitting Consultant and Associate Administrator, LVPEI–BostonSight Scleral & PROSE. His presentation not only explained the clinical importance of sight restoration with scleral lenses but also gave students a glimpse of how these lenses transform the lives of patients battling with Corneal ectatic conditions (E.g. Keratoconus and post-surgical irregularities) and Ocular surface disorders (E.g. Chemical/Thermal injuries and severe dry eyes).

The real excitement unfolded inside the manufacturing unit. Students watched, step by step, how a tiny disc of material slowly evolved into a life-changing scleral lens. From selecting the raw material, carving the back curve, shaping the front curve, and checking measurements, to the fine art of polishing, laser marking, plasma treatment, and final packaging—every stage revealed a blend of science, state-of-the-art precision, and craftsmanship.

For many, it was the first time witnessing the behind-the-scenes magic of lens making. “It felt like seeing theory come alive,” one student shared, while another described it as “an eye-opening experience that makes us value the impact of our profession even more.”

The visit left the group inspired, reinforcing their belief that optometry is not just about correcting vision but about restoring confidence, independence, and quality of life. With gratitude, the students thanked the team at LVPEI BostonSight Manufacturing Lab for opening their doors to the next generation of optometrists and giving them a glimpse of what lies beyond textbook
