Dr. Usha Raman, Associate Professor, Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been selected to receive a Fulbright Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship for the year 2016-17, which she will be utilizing to spend a semester at the Comparative Media Studies Program at MIT. She will be in Boston, Massachusetts from August to December 2016 as a part of the Fulbright Program.
Dr. Raman’s Fulbright project combines her interests in new media and health. The teaching component will unfold as a series of seminars on five different themes that encapsulate the problematics of health as a globalized industry and an intersectoral practice, with specific examples from India, which is both a destination for global health tourists and a laboratory for innovative public health programmes for the most marginalized.
The research project is located at the interface of new media studies, adolescent communicative behaviour and health, with a view to developing a conceptual understanding that combines learning from these fields in a manner that can contribute to the development of technology based communication interventions among young people at risk.
Apart from teaching Dr. Usha Raman is the Editor of Teacher Plus Magazine, the author of ‘Writing for the Media’ published by the Oxford University Press India as well as ‘Hyderabad – A Sangam Guide’, a poet with her collection ‘All the spaces in between’ published by Writers Workshop, Kolkata
