The University of Hyderabad takes pride in the latest scholarly contribution by Prof. Ajailiu Niumai, faculty at the Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion (CSSI), School of Social Sciences, whose edited volume with Prof. Abha Chauhan and Prof. Tattwamasi Paltasingh on Hundred Years of Sociology in India: Evolving Issues, Emerging Trends has been published by Springer Nature in July 2025.

This volume is a timely and comprehensive scholarly reflection on the growth and transformation of sociology in India over the past century. Comprising twenty-four insightful chapters and an introductory essay, the book brings together the work of many of India’s most distinguished sociologists, alongside emerging voices, some of whom are Plenary speakers and some presented their research papers at the 47th All India Sociological Conference of the Indian Sociological Society (ISS) held at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) in December 2023.
Notably, Prof. Niumai has also contributed a chapter titled “Sociology in Northeast India: Beginning to Present,” which critically maps the emergence and institutionalization of sociology in the region. Her chapter brings to light the unique socio-cultural and political specificities that shape sociological inquiry in Northeast India, and repositions the region within the national sociological discourse.
This volume offers an in-depth and pluralistic account of the discipline’s evolution in tandem with India’s shifting social, cultural, and intellectual landscapes. It interrogates themes ranging from colonialism, nationalism, and modernization to liberalization, globalization, and climate change, reflecting the discipline’s responsiveness to societal transitions. Rich in theoretical perspectives and grounded in empirical rigour, the book spans topics such as digital sociology, environmental and agrarian movements, Dalit and tribal assertions, political sociology, gerontology, migration, gender studies, Political Science, history and sustainable development.
With its wide scope and interdisciplinary appeal, Hundred Years of Sociology in India: Evolving Issues, Emerging Trends stands as a major academic resource not just for sociologists but also for scholars and policymakers working in anthropology, gender studies, development studies, and public policy. It marks a significant step toward documenting and shaping the future of Indian sociology.
The University community congratulates Prof. Ajailiu Niumai on this important achievement and her continued efforts in promoting inclusive, regionally grounded, and socially engaged scholarship. The book is available at SpringerLink:
