The Centre for Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), University of Hyderabad, hosted a special lecture by Prof. Andy Turner, Professor in Monsoon Systems at the University of Reading, on 13 February 2026. The lecture focused on recent advances in understanding and modelling monsoon extremes using high-resolution observations and numerical models.

Prof. Turner highlighted the importance of multiscale interactions, particularly the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation (BSISO), in modulating monsoon depressions and coastal convection near the Western Ghats. He further discussed the role of midlatitude dry air in driving monsoon breaks and the potential increase in moist heat waves under a warming climate.

Building on his extensive research into tropical variability and monsoon dynamics, as well as aerial observations from flight campaigns over north India during the 2016 summer monsoon, he presented new insights from kilometre-scale models of synoptic disturbances such as monsoon depressions.

The seminar was followed by an engaging interaction session, where faculty members of CEOAS and Masters and PhD students discussed various aspects of the lecture as well as broader themes of tropical climate variability and change.

Prof. Turner also guided students on opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral research in the UK, particularly at the University of Reading. The Head of the Department felicitated Prof. Turner with a memento in recognition of his visit.
