Gopika Mohan, a research scholar under the supervision of Prof. M.S Siva Raju, Department of Dance, SN School of Arts & Communication, University of Hyderabad (UoH), presented two papers in an International Conference and a National Seminar.
The first paper titled “Tradition to Innovation: Manufacture of Popular (Reality) Dance Shows in South India” demonstrates how the tradition of dance underwent transformation upon being mediated. As dance genres infiltrated reality television, they garnered momentum, captivating audiences through various formats and competitions. These dance-based reality shows not only broadened their fan base but also substantially bolstered television ratings for both the shows and the channels airing them. The allure of captivating dance performances and competitive spirit proved to be a winning formula for attracting and retaining audiences. Thus, as the dancing tradition fragmented and incorporated various elements through mediation, its popularity surged, leading to the emergence of a new tradition. The paper has presented at 1st International Conference on ‘Modernities Redefined: Perspectives from South Asia’ organized by GITAM School of Humanities and Social Science, GITAM (Deemed to be University) Bangalore, sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research, held on February 22nd & 23rd 2024.
The second paper titled “Medium, Methods and Madness an Analytical Study of Youth Festivals in the Higher Education Scenario of Kerala” demonstrates how the university Youth Festivals are becoming a method, medium and madness among the students. University festivals, initiated with diverse objectives over the years, have undergone significant changes in the present university atmosphere. This paper raising the problems and folly organization among the youth festivals in Kerala that made the festival to a mere annual phenomenon at universities. The paper has presented in the 9th National Seminar on ‘Demystifying Higher Education in India: Paradigms, Policies, and Practices’ organized by Sanskruti- Institute of Dravidian Culture and Research, Hyderabad held on 16th & 17th February 2024.
