Prof. Tushar Jana, Senior Professor in the School of Chemistry, has been elected as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), Bengaluru (www.ias.ac.in) for the year 2026, in recognition of his outstanding and sustained contributions to the fields of polymer chemistry and materials science.

Prof. Tushar Jana

Prof. Jana obtained his B.Sc. (1995) and M.Sc. (1997) in Chemistry from the University of Calcutta, and completed his Ph.D. (2001) at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata. He carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Pittsburgh and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), USA, during 2002–2005. He joined the University of Hyderabad in 2005 and has been serving as Professor of Chemistry since 2013.

His research focuses on polymer membranes, hydrogen energy, polymeric nanostructures, sustainable polymers and polyurethanes. Over the years, Prof. Jana’s research group has developed several advanced polymeric materials with applications in fuel cells, water electrolyzers, sensors, drug delivery, protein binding, energetic polymers, coatings, and environmentally benign materials. His group has also been actively engaged in translating research outcomes into commercial technologies through collaborations with industry partners.

A dedicated academic mentor, Prof. Jana has supervised a large number of Master’s and Ph.D. students, as well as postdoctoral fellows. His scientific excellence has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Young Associateship of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Young Scientist Medal of the Indian National Science Academy, the Alkyl Amines–ICT Foundation Day Young Scientist Award, the University of Hyderabad Chancellor’s Award (2018), and the Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India (2019).

Prof. Jana is an Associate Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences and a Fellow of the Telangana Academy of Sciences (2015), the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (2021), and the National Academy of Sciences, India (2022). He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Macromolecular Science, Parts A and B, is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Chemical Sciences, and has previously served as Vice-President of the Society of Polymer Science, India.
