The School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad research scholar in Public Health Mr. Sunny Mannava represented university of Hyderabad at the prestigious International Maternal and Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC) 2023. Sunny made an oral presentation on “Health system and environmental influences on fear of maternity care litigation in India (Re-Judge project)”.

 

Re-Judge was an international research collaborative study undertaken under the guidance of Prof. B. R. Shamanna as Principal Investigator in partnership with Prof. Soo Downe – University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), UK, World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva and Dalhousie University, Canada with partners in Brazil funded by the prestigious Bill & Mellinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

The panel also presented their recently published review article on “Behavioural factors associated with fear of litigation as a driver for the increased use of caesarean sections: A scoping review” in the British Medical Journal – Open Access. The Re-Judge project studied the behavioural drivers related to fear of litigation being a driver of caesarean section in India and has started developing a multimedia intervention package for lawyers and judges. The presentation was part of a panel exploring fear which is an emerging topic in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Sunny received full scholarship to attend the conference from the prestigious Jhpeigo (Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics) organization and he is thankful to his supervisor Prof. B. R. Shamanna, Prof. Soo Downe, and the School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad for giving him this opportunity.

Sunny a 2019 batch scholar is currently a fully funded future research talent fellow at ANU, Canberra, Australia working on health economics portfolio related to his Ph.D and will complete his doctoral research by end of year 2023.

The Dean and faculty of the school were very pleased and feel that the doctoral research program of the school in Health Sciences that started in 2017 is already attracting very good scholars to register for the same.
