Prof. Amba Kulkarni, Head Department of Sanskrit Studies, delivered a keynote speech at the LINGUINDIC Conference being held at the Wolfson College, University of Oxford, from 12-14th June, 2025. She spoke on “Analysis of Sanskrit Compounds: Constituency or dependency?”. This is an extension of her Team’s work on the Saṃsādhanī – A Sanskrit Computational Linguistic – Platform to handle the compound analysis.

The LINGUINDIC conference aims to bring together experts in modern linguistics and the ancient Indian linguistic tradition to explore and develop interfaces between the traditions, and to enable deeper understanding and innovation in both fields.

This conference is attended by around 60 scholars from United States, Canada, several European countries and India. Apart from Prof Amba Kulkarni, there were 3 other Keynote speakers, one each from the Stanford University, Michigen University and IIT Bombay.

The scope of the conference is rela0vely broad, and it encompass Indological/ philological work on the ancient Indian linguis0c tradi0on(s), modern linguis0c work on Sanskrit and other ancient Indian languages, and the interface between the two linguis0c tradi0ons including the computa0onal linguis0cs. Prof Amba Kulkarni being one of the few people whose work connects modern linguis0cs, especially computa0onal linguis0cs, and vyākaraṇa, she was invited to deliver the keynote address. Her talk on a topic that bridges the two tradi0ons was very well eceived.
