On 30 October 2026, final-year I.M. Optometry students from the School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad visited the LVPEI-BostonSight Lens Manufacturing Lab at LV Prasad Eye Institute. The visit aimed to learn the intricacies of scleral lens manufacturing and understand how to translate classroom knowledge into patient care as part of the Advanced Contact Lenses subject.

Lens blanks and samples
The visit gave students first-hand exposure to how these lenses are processed in a specialised laboratory, complementing their classroom and clinical learning. To help students understand the laboratory workflow behind scleral lens processing and to connect classroom learning on speciality contact lenses with contact lens practice

Measuring lens thickness with a digital gauge
Ms. Kiranmayi walked the students through how scleral lenses are processed in the laboratory, explaining the steps and techniques involved. Students were able to follow how a lens progresses from raw material to a finished lens ready for fitting.

Checking lens dimensions against a metal scale
Students were shown lens blanks, buttons, and finished samples in a range of rigid gas-permeable materials, and the properties of these materials were discussed.
The visit included a live demonstration and a discussion of practical aspects of scleral lens work with the LVPEI team.

The visit was an enriching experience for the final-year optometry students, bridging classroom learning and real-world laboratory practice. Optometry students extend their thanks to Ms Kiranmayi and the LV Prasad Eye Institute team for their time, expertise and hospitality, and to Dr Nagaraju Konda, Associate Professor, School of Medical Sciences, for his guidance and support in organising the visit.
