The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved special assistance programme grant worth Rs 1.20 Cr to Department of English at University of Hyderabad (UoH).

The grant has been recommended for the Department under the School of Humanities, after the status of the departments was reviewed by the UGC and upgraded from Department of Special Assistance (DSA)-I to DSA-II.

Out of this 50 Lakhs is non-recurring and 70 Lakhs is recurring grant for a period of five years. One Project Fellow has also been sanctioned for this period and the thrust area of the programme is English in India: Variants & Contemporary Developments.

Dr. Murali Manohar, present Head of the department and former coordinator says that the previous coordinators namely Prof. M. Sridhar and Prof. Syed Mujerbuddin have put in lot of efforts and the assessment was made based on performance of previous projects and the present proposals submitted by the faculty from the department.

Prof. Pramod K Nayar and Dr. Anna Kurian are the Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator respectively for this present programme.

Very recently in the subject-wise ranking of top universities in a survey conducted by the QSWorld University Rankings University of Hyderabad has been the only university from India which could find a place among the best universities of the World. This means that UoH is the best place in India to pursue higher studies in English language and Literature.
