The University of Hyderabad (UoH) and the Centre for DNA Finger Printing and Diagnosis (CDFD) jointly organised an Informative Session on BioE3 Policy at the School of Life Sciences in University of Hyderabad on 4th September 2024.
The Bio E3 policy was recently approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The policy is aimed at ‘Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing’ aligned with National initiatives of the government of India such as ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy and Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for environment).
Prof. Ullas S. Kolthur (Director, CDFD) gave an overview of BioE3 policy. He said, “The policy will also undertake initiatives for climate-resilient agriculture and futuristic marine and space research. The BioE3 Policy seeks to accelerate this growth trajectory, with projections to reach $300 billion by 2030 as given by the Government of India. By pivoting from traditional consumptive practices to high-performance, regenerative biomanufacturing, the policy aligns with India’s vision of a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future.”
Prof. B J Rao, Vice Chancellor, UoH spoke on the Challenges & Opportunities of BioE3 for Start-ups, Job creation & involvement of Industry-academia linkage for the same. He said, “India has a good biotechnology hub. We need to improve a lot to catch up and overtake the other countries. It’s a challenge for us and we need to put out an agenda to meet the bio economy GDP targets for our nation.”
“It’s a challenge for the young researchers to contribute to this initiative. Faculty, Scientists and Researchers should think differently and build upon ideas that become an innovation and which will benefit our economy”, Prof. Rao added.
Prof. Anand Kondapi, Dean, School of Life Sciences spoke on the role of Academicians in this initiative.
Prof. S. Rajagopal, Director, ASPIRE- BioNest at UoH gave insights into the role of Start-ups in this initiative.
