The University of Hyderabad is organizing a two-day ‘National Workshop on Digitization and its techniques’ on the occasion of Librarian’s day, from August 26-27, 2017 in the Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Library. The workshop commemorated with the UoH Vice-chancellor Prof. Appa Rao offering garland to the portrait of Dr. Siyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, father of Library science in India.
The workshop which was limited to only 25 participants is attended by Librarians from various colleges and institutions across the country. Dr. N. Varatharajan, University Librarian and the workshop Director, in his address thanked participants for registering for the event and said, “We received around 160 online applications across the nation to attend the workshop and then we selected 25 participants on need basis.” Talking about the digitization techniques and the workshop he further said that IGM Library is equipped with all the upgraded digitization technology and participants will get a hands-on experience with the same.
The workshop aims to share the digitization experiences of IGM Library. Areas such as digitization process/steps involved, different steps in digitization, types of digital book scanners, scanning techniques, image formats, image cleaning/editing process, OCR, PDF Conversion, copyright, etc. will be covered by the resource persons during the workshop.
The Chief Guest for the event Prof. Appa Rao in his inaugural speech welcomed the participants and advised them to grasp more and more from the workshop. He called upon them to make use of their learning during the workshop in implementing it at their own libraries and centers and find new methods of innovation in library sciences.
Comparing the technology from his days as a scholar from current times, he said, “Each research scholar had bundles of photocopied material in their rooms when I was doing my PhD, which is not the case anymore with the advent of digitalization techniques and the internet.” He further added, “Digitized era makes knowledge available at multiple locations for anybody to use. The cloud computing technology has also given us the advantage of accessing unlimited space to store information.” He praised and congratulated the library staff on organizing such a workshop which can help in sharing the knowledge.
Dr. B. Ravi, Librarian UoH, who is also the Workshop Coordinator, concluded the event by thanking everybody present at the venue.
The event ended with tea and discussion among the participants and dignitaries.
