Prof. N.R. Bhanumurthy, an alumnus of the School of Economics, University of Hyderabad (UoH), MA (1993-95) and MPhil (1997), has been appointed Director of the Madras School of Economics. Dr. C Rangarajan, former Chancellor of University of Hyderabad is the Chairman of Madras School of Economics. Prof Bhanumurthy recently concluded his term as Vice Chancellor of Bengaluru’s Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE) University.

Prof. Bhanumurthy served as a Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) in New Delhi. Previously, he held roles as Assistant and Associate Professor at the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Delhi. His career includes roles as a macroeconomist at UNESCAP in Bangkok and the UNDP Regional Centre for Asia-Pacific in Colombo. He has also been a Visiting Fellow at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris and McGill University in Montreal. His consulting experience includes work with the ILO, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank.

In addition to his academic and consulting roles, Prof. Bhanumurthy is the Secretary of the Indian Econometric Society and the Managing Trustee of the Indian Economic Association Trust for Research and Development. He is also involved in various government committees. He holds a Ph.D. in International Finance from the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) in Bangalore. A prominent policy columnist and prolific researcher, Prof. Bhanumurthy has published extensively in national and international journals and has authored numerous commissioned policy papers.
