The Department of Urdu, School of Humanities organized a talk on “Role of Artificial Intelligence in Development of Urdu” by Prof. Salman Abdul Moiz, School of Computer and Information Sciences, as a part of Golden Jubilee Lecture Series-2.  Dr. Rafia Begum, Assistant Professor, Department of Urdu, gave a welcome address. Prof. Syed Fazlullah, Head of Department of Urdu and Coordinator of the Golden Jubilee Lecture Series, gave a background of the Golden Jubilee Lecture Series and introduced the speaker to the audience. Prof. M.T Ansari, Dean School of Humanities, inaugurated the event and congratulated the Department of Urdu for conducting talks on various topics as a part of the Golden Jubilee Lecture Series.

Addressing the audience, Prof. Salman said that Artificial Intelligence can be used in various Urdu literature and translation domains. He said that if an attempt can be made to extract features of literature or a document in the Urdu language, there is a possibility to make machines learn and automate the tasks. Prof Salman highlighted the need for a speech recognition system that can identify various Urdu dialects. He also expressed how a document can be classified into Khaleda, Ghazal, or Nazm by training the system. He highlighted the challenges associated with the optical recognition system in Urdu because of the various ways the same content is expressed. Prof. Salman said there is a possibility of the development of Indian Sign Language for persons with disabilities in Urdu that can help the needy. He introduced the audience to an open-source Python library developed for preprocessing Urdu text called LughaatNLP. Prof. Salman also demonstrated the use of Generative AI tools in Urdu. He urged the researchers to explore AI tools for literature surveys. The speaker also discussed the ethical issues related to the use of artificial intelligence.

The event was conducted in a hybrid mode, and faculty members and research scholars participated nationwide. The event concluded with thanks from Prof. Syed Fazlullah, Head of the Department of Urdu, School of Humanities.
